A wide variety of information
and communication technologies (ICT) are currently employed to facilitate
design education in higher education institutions (HEI). It is exploited
in subject fields such as architecture, fashion design, engineering,
graphic design and the crafts. Partly, the reasons for the extent
and variety reflect generic issues of worsening staff/student ratios
and the need to develop transferable and specific skills and knowledge
of ICT. But partly, the variety is a consequence of the unique requirements
of design education, the new opportunities afforded by new and emerging
technologies and local factors such as the expertise and interest
of design staff.
This project aims to collect ‘snapshots’ of good practice
from a variety of international universities and colleges and to
make these snapshots available to the design community in HEI via
a single DVD. These snapshots will include video summaries of practice
by key teaching staff, examples of new software and student work,
comments by students and discussions of key issues.

It is intended that this DVD resource
will promote the use of ICT in undergraduate design education, assist
HEIs to develop their own provision and provide contacts with centres
of excellence. If you feel your institution may be able to offer
material for this DVD, or if you wish to discuss this further please
contact one of the people below.
The data gathering and DVD production will be undertaken by Peter
Simcoe during 2005 and the project is being coordinated by Dr Steve
Garner at the Open University, UK
